WEEE Retailers

Determining if you are affected?

You are identified as a retailer or (“distributor”) under the WEEE regulations if you sell Electrical or Electronic Equipment (EEE) to end-users in the UK, however you sell them, e.g. through retail facilities, by mail or internet order etc.

Although as a retailer you do not have any financial responsibilities for ensuring WEEE is recycled or treated, you are required as a retailer of household EEE to facilitate the take-back of household WEEE by offering in-store take back or joining a take back scheme

Q. Does your business sell electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) to consumers (end user) whether you sell them directly through retail facilities (shops) or indirectly via the internet or mail order?

A. If you answer ‘yes’ you are considered to be a ‘distributor’ (Retailer) under the Regulations and will be required to meet certain criteria set out by the WEEE directive. You have a choice of offering in-store take back or alternatively joining a take back scheme.
