Solar bins rolled out in Bournemouth

Posted on 3rd April, 2011

Bournemouth Council has installed 25 solar-powered bins along the seafront. These special bins self compact the waste to ensure that they can be used to maximum capacity and send a signal back to the Council team when they are full.

These bins form part of the council’s £1m Smart Streets campaign which it hopes will encourage people to dispose of waste more responsibly.

The new bins which light up in the dark will also be installed at Lansdowne and Old Christchurch Road to crack down on revellers’ late night litter.

Stuart Best, Street Services manager, said: “Street cleansing is a high priority. We have been able to invest in a number of initiatives to encourage more people to dispose of their waste responsibly.”
