According to the latest figures from the European Aluminium Association the UK’s aluminium can recycling rates are getting a lot closer to the European average.
The data shows that in 2009 the recycling rate for aluminum cans was 54 per cent compared to the European average of 64.3 per cent. This is compared to the 2008 rate of 51 per cent.
Despite the increase, there are still concerns that the UK is lagging behind the rest of Europe. Germany and Finland top the table recycling 96 per cent and 95 per cent respectively. These countries use a can deposit scheme, something which was ruled out by the UK government in the June 2011 wast review.
