It’s Compost Awareness Week

Posted on 4th May, 2011

This week (1st- 7th May) is Compost Awareness Week, up and down the country councils, retailers and community groups are promoting the benefits of home composting.

Now in it’s 11th year, this international awareness week aims to encourage more householders to have a go at composting.

As part of the week, Worcestershire county council are being highlighted as an example of how councils can get involved. Over the last few years they have offered ‘composting clinics’, and have offered residents composting bins at a reduced rate. They claim 90,000 residents have already taken advantage of the councils subsidy on bins.

Christopher Atkinson, senior waste prevention officer at Worcestershire, said: “Homemade compost will produce great results in your garden, you can use it to top up pots, feed trees and shrubs, or help grow award winning flowers and vegetables.

“You can even feed your lawn. By composting your garden waste at home you can also save yourself a trip to the household recycling centre too.”
