Battery recycling by Wastecare

With over 30,000 battery collection points nationally, we collect and treat over 60% of all waste portable batteries recycled in the UK – regardless of type or chemistry.

Our specialist portable battery recycling facility in Halifax was the first of its kind to be opened in the UK. With a 25,000 tonne annual capacity, this is enough to enable us to recycle 100% of the UK’s spent alkaline and zinc carbon batteries.

Our facility is capable of pre-treating batteries containing Lithium, Nickel-Cadmium, Lead, and Mercury, prior to pyro-recovery.

How our portable battery recycling facility works

Step 1

Batteries are collected from businesses and supermarkets nationwide via our fleet of licensed vehicles and delivered into our recycling plant in Halifax.

Step 2

The batteries are then sorted according to their type and their chemistry, to ensure they are recycled appropriately.

Step 3

The sorted batteries are then shredded to make for easier separation of the different components – such as lead, nickel and cadmium.

Step 4

The shredded batteries are then passed through several sieves and induced magnetic separators which work to identify and separate the different types of metals.

Step 5

Anything leftover such as carbon, plastic, or paper, is removed for further recycling.

Step 6

A mixture of valuable metals called black mass is also captured during the process – which is separated for future recovery.

Step 7

All recovered materials are then passed onto the appropriate third party, for recycling into new products such as stainless-steel cutlery, electrical cables, and household white paint.

Battery Producer Compliance

As the largest collector and recycler of batteries in the UK, this enables us to meet the recycling obligations for those customers who have joined our Battery Producer Compliance Scheme.

We also pass on any third-party EA-recognised evidence that is made available to us at cost.
