What happens to batteries after collection

From Collection to Recycling

Once collected, your batteries are transported to our specialist portable battery recycling facility in Halifax. This site is the first of it’s kind in the United Kingdom and has the capacity to process up to twenty-five thousand tonnes of batteries every year.

When the batteries arrive, they are carefully sorted by type and chemistry. This helps our team recover valuable materials safely and efficiently. Sorting is one of the most important stages in the process because it ensure that every battery is handled in the right way for its chemical makeup.

Recovering Valuable Materials

After sorting, the batteries are shredded to separate the different materials they contain. During this stage, metals, plastics, and paper from the casings are separated and sent to their own treatment processes.

From this, we can recover valuable resources such as cobalt, nickel, zinc, and steel. These materials are then used to create new products, including fresh batteries, tools, paints, and building materials. Every battery recycled reduces the need to mine and extract new raw materials, helping to preserve natural resources and protect the environment.

A Nationwide Network

Supporting our Halifax facility is a network of more than thirty thousand recycling points across the country. Operated under the Battrecycle campaign, this network makes it easy for households, retailers, schools, and local authorities to recycle batteries safely and responsibly.

Every collection point plays a part in preventing batteries from being thrown away with general waste. When batteries end up in ordinary bins, they can cause fires and release harmful substances into the environment. By recycling them through our Battrecycle network, we make sure they are treated correctly and transformed into something useful once more

Our Circular Approach

At Wastecare, recycling batteries is not just about disposal. It is about creating a closed loop where materials can be used again and again. From collection and transport, to sorting, recovery, and reuse, every stage of our process is designed to reduce waste and recover value.

Every battery we recycle helps reduce landfill, prevent pollution, and return essential materials to the supply chain. Through our investment in innovation and our commitment to transparency, we are proud to lead the way in sustainable battery recycling.

Join Us in Powering a Circular Future

If your organisation produces waste batteries, our team can help you manage collections safely and compliantly. You can also find your nearest Battrecycle collection point and learn more about how every recycled battery helps fund community projects across the United Kingdom.

Together, we can power a cleaner, more circular future.
