The change in the law last year has been instrumental in altering attitudes towards “reuse” or more specifically the reuse of electrical appliances. Although, previously it was understandable, manufacturers and retailers were concerned about the risks associated with electrical goods reappearing on the market without proper controls and via unauthorised outlets; things have changed.

With reuse now topping the waste hierarchy, it is essential that retailers and manufacturers, as well as those handling unwanted used domestic appliances have an accredited and reliable outlet. WasteCare has been recycling and refurbishing IT equipment for over 20 years, it was therefore a logical step to move into white and brown goods some 18 months ago, in preparation of the regulatory emphasis on reuse.

EeeCare was launched in early 2012 and shortly after became the first facility to be accredited to PAS141, the quality standard for refurbished electrical equipment. The company has now developed a number of key contracts with both retailers and manufacturers, currently refurbishing over 2,500 units a week, including fridges, washing machines and cookers. The company plans to add flat screen TVs and small domestic appliances to the range in 2013.

Much of the refurbished equipment is currently supplied into the charity sector. We are therefore delighted to announce that we have recently purchased the ElectroFarm online portal which will enable us to sell product on behalf of charities and directly to consumers. We plan to provide a national service enabling consumers to donate unwanted electrical products, regardless of age and condition, as well as buy high quality refurbished appliances through high street charity stores. By providing products with up to 12 months manufacturer’s warranty, a next day delivery service plus money back for reusable appliances, we are confident that demand will keep growing. This service not only helps manufacturers and retailers meet their regulatory and WEEE obligations, it also substantially reduces scrapage.
