Prison waste all sewn up

Posted on 9th September, 2013

This month WasteCare has been helping Her Majesties Prison Service to re-use and recycle unwanted equipment. Due to a recent building renovation, WasteCare were approached by HMP Wakefield to clear the site of Waste including Furniture, Electricals, Textiles and over 70 industrial sewing machines formally used by the inmates. In order to increase the re-use potential the sewing machines were collected separately over several trips including over several weekends.

Despite several obstacles including access, loading and security restrictions all of the waste was collected, and because extra care was taken in making the collections, many of the sewing machines can be re-used.

A special thank you should be made to all of the prison staff and WasteCare representatives involved for their efforts on what proved to be a challenging yet overall successful challenge.
